Abstract

Although the Vikings were only around for a few hundred years, they left their mark in history, both while living and on their way to the afterlife. The Viking’s burial rituals consisted of cremation, as was custom to their Pagan beliefs. After the cremation, the ashes went into an urn, and was then taken to their burial mound, along with gifts and sacrifices for the dead. It was strongly believed that Viking’s would continue to train to become warriors in the next life for Ragnarök, so they were buried with their weapons, money, and treasures to go with them after death. There was one fire ship called the Oseberg Ship, which was thought to transport a Viking Queen to the next life due to the amount of treasures and the grandness of the ship. Utilizing burial ships was not a common practice for Vikings, as it was reserved for those who died heroically in battle or were considered royalty. Transportation was needed to get to the afterlife, so wagons, horses, ships, etc. were buried with the body to provide safe travels to Valhalla.
